Individual Report for Nathan Hendricks

Nathan Hendricks (c1815-1882) was one of the earliest settlers of Echols County and was likely there when the county was founded in 1858. He was born c1815 in North Carolina (based on census). According to the pension application of his son, William H. C. Hendricks, the family was from Nash County, NC and DNA evidence seems to support this. According to a loyalty oath he signed in 1867, he had been in the county for 30 years, so probably moved to Georgia c1837. He operated a large farm in Echols County. He served as Sheriff of Echols County, 1867-1868 and again from 1878-81 and ran for the state legislature in 1880. He died April 1, 1882 and place of burial is not known (possibly at Wayfare Church). Nathan probably married at least 4 times and the name of his first wife is not known.

Death Certificate of WHC Hendricks: consistent with above

A brief note on the list of children of WHC Hendricks. Family oral history is that there were 12 children, but I have only been able to confirm ten. There is a point of controversy on the last two, Haulie and Caulie who were twins. Caulie was my grandfather. In the 1900 census he is listed as a grandson and oral tradition in the family of descendants of Savillah, the eldest sister, is that they were grandchildren of WHC and Levicia. However, oral history in the descendants of both men is that WHC and Vicy were their parents (based on descendant’s memories of relationships with other descendants). Both Caulie and Haulie listed WHC and Levicia as their parents on their social security applications, both death certificates list them as parents and a family Bible belonging to Haulie's son lists WHC and Levicia as parents. Also, descendants of William C. Hendricks (clearly son of WHC and Levicia) remember Caulie as brother to William C. Hendricks and therefore child of WHC and Levicia.

However, recent DNA research throws much doubt on this. I have compared my DNA with the DNA of a descendant of William C. Hendricks (WHC and Levicia's son) and it does not match. His does match another Hendricks, though. This seems to support the hypothesis that Caulie was a grandson and that they were the children of an unmarried daughter of WHC and Vicy (Rachel Emma is the most likely suspect) and were then raised as children.

It may never be possible to "prove" this point one way or another and since I don't know which daughter would be the mother, I have not changed my database. Regardless of the exact relation, certainly the family connection is not in dispute. It should be noted that the only person I matched closely with (12/12 and 23/25 alleles) was a man named Young whose family hailed from NC. There were several Youngs in the area including one that Nathan Hendricks married and another, David Barineau Young who married a daughter of Nathan. Of further interest, my DNA matched a person from a Barineau family. Perhaps this is a clue to the truth.

Echols County census of 1870 lists a "Mathew Hendrix", 55, b. GA and his wife Nancy, 40, b. NC and daughter Marie, 5. Not known if there is any relationship between WHC and this Mathew.

Military info: Enlisted in CSA July, 1862 in Savannah, Ga. WHC Hendricks filed an application for a pension in 1907 from the State of Florida as a Confederate Veteran and an increase in pension in 1909. This notarized document, signed by him, gives some information about his early life and especially his military service. According to the pension application, WHC Hendricks joined the Confederate Army in Savannah, GA in July, 1862. In his words:

"We were first a company of heavy artilery (sic) then was put in the Sixth Regiment later into the Fifth Regiment owing to the thining out of our men. Then we had reserve troops placed with us but retained our same officers, company and Regiment (?word) we were spoken of as reserves but were Confederate Troops and in Confederate service all the time and were never state troops."

He was initially in "Capt. RA Peoples Company". His tombstone lists his unit as "Co E, 5 Ga Inf, CSA". At the end of the war, he was in Co H., 5th Ga Reserves, his Captain was CW Haines and his Regiment Commander was Colonel JR Symons or (Simmons). Other information in the application states that he was "wounded in ankle but not disabled at Battle of Lynchburg, VA in 1863". This is hard to pin down. He was involved in the siege and ultimate surrender of Savannah, but evacuated with the army into SC. He "was captured in January or February in 1865 in South Carolina but made escape in about 5 hours". He was with General Joseph E. Johnston's Army at the end of the war and was paroled and honorably discharged at Goldsboro, NC on April 26, 1865. In the Georgia archives, his military papers are apparently filed under "Pvt, HC Hendricks, Co. G, 1st Btn, Ga Reserves", also referred to as Symon's Ga Reserves.

Research has found (based on website - http://members.aol.com/mapurdy16/Infantry.htm#IBGIR): 6th Reg Ga Inf, Reserves has Co H. 1st Lt C. W. Haynes; 1st (Symon's) Reg Ga Inf, Reserves has Co. G, R. A. Peoples and Col. J. R. Symons. As best I can tell, at time of Battle of Bentonville (about 1 month before surrender), order of battle was: Dept. of SC, FA, FL; Hardee's Corps; McLaw's Division; Symon's Reserves.
Records found for Charles W. Haynes, who started as 1st Sgt. in Benjamin Milikin's Co. of Reserves (which later became Co. F, 1st Rgt (Symon's) Georgia Reserves). He enlisted April 26, 1864 in Savannah, Ga. Subsequently became 2nd Lt., Co. G.,

1st Btn (later 1st Rgt) Georgia Reserves in July and August, 1864. Another note in his military record lists him as 1st Lt., Co. H., 6th Rgt. Ga Reserves.

Note in record mentions 6th Rgt. Ga. Reserves at Branchville, SC Feb. 5, 1865. He submitted his resignation to Gen'l S. Cooper from "Co. H., 6th Rgt, Geo Reserves (Col. Wm. R. Symonsl)". Refers to MG McLaws and Lt. General Hardee.

Records of Capt. Richard A. Peeples also found in Co. G, 1st (Symons) Ga Reserves. Capt. Peeples also listed as in Co. G., 6th Ga Reserves on a list of POW surrendered to BG E. M. McCook by MG Sam Jones, CSA at Tallahassee, Florida on May 10, 1865. Peeples signed his parole as a member of 6th Ga Reserves.

Timeline and Known Facts about Nathan Hendricks
born ca1815 in NC, according to census records. Possibly as early as late 1813-early 1814 according to militia muster list.
1840: Twiggs County, GA census lists "Nathan Hendricks" with 1m<5; 1m 20-30; 1f<5;
1f 20-30; 1f 50-60
1841: John W. Hendricks (son) born in Twiggs County in 1841 per family Bible and pension application.
1843: Nash Co, NC, WHC Hendricks (son) born  per pension app. by WHC Hendrick. John W. Hendricks' census data consistently lists his father (Nathan) as born in NC and mother in GA. It has been a mystery how John could be born in GA in 1841 and WHC in NC in 1843. However, it seems that Tignal       Hendricks, presumed (but not proven) father of Nathan died somewhere in this time frame. Could the family have gone back to Nash County, NC to settle estates or for one last visit with a dying father? Perhaps Nathan's wife was pregnant with WHC and he was born there. Clearly all is speculation at this point.
1850: Nathan Hendricks not yet found in census; have searched Twiggs County, Ga; Lowndes Co;

Other possible relatives
Berry Hendricks
Birth:   Abt. 1802
Person Notes:  Connection with Nathan T. Hendricks is presumptive and circumstantial and not
proven. Land transactions indicate a relationship between Nathan and Wilson Hendricks in mid-1800's in Georgia. Published genealogy of Wilson Hendricks indicates him as son of Tignal Hendricks of Nash County, NC (primary source unknown, but possibly family information). Pension papers of WHC Hendrick (son of Nathan) indicate he was born in Nash County, NC. It is likely that Nathan is related to this family, though he could be descendant of Tignal's brother Isaac or even      more distant relationship. Relationship to Berry is also purely speculative. Nash County court records refer to a "Kittleberry Hendricks". He was ordered in Nash          County Feb Term 1828 to pay Polly Pridgen for support of her child of which he was             the reputed father.
Aug Court 1828 - Littleberry Hendrick and Polly Pridgen again appear
1840 Twiggs County, GA census lists both Berry and Nathan Hendricks
1850 Twiggs County, GA census lists Berry, 48 y/o from NC with family.

Reviewing census data implies following family members:
     dtr b. 1790-1800
three sons born btw. 1800-1810, one listed in 1820 as born between 1802-1804 (possibly Berry?).
     dtr b. 1800-1810
three more sons born between 1810 and 1820 (this would potentially include Wilson and Nathan).
two dtrs b. btw 1820-1830, one before 1825, one after.
1830 census has 2 males less than 10, could be error and actually refer to 2 of the
3 sons born between 1810-1820, maybe Nathan and Wilson?

Elizabeth Etheridge (1st wife of Tignal Hendricks and therefore probable mother of Nathan and Wilson)
Birth:   Abt. 1784
Death: Bef. 1824

Wilson Hendricks
Birth:   1811 in Nash, North Carolina, USA
Marriage:         03 Jul 1845 in Twiggs County, Georgia
Death: 22 Aug 1878 in Georgia
Person Notes:  History of Laurens County refers to Wilson Hendricks as son of Tignal Hendricks. Connection with Nathan T. Hendricks is presumptive and circumstantial and not proven. Land transactions indicate a relationship between Nathan and Wilson Hendricks in mid-1800's in Georgia. Published genealogy of Wilson Hendricks states he is the son of Tignal Hendricks of Nash County, NC (primary source unknown, but possibly family information). Pension papers of WHC Hendrick (son of Nathan) indicate he was born in Nash County, NC. It is likely that Nathan is related to this family, though he could be descendant of Tignal's brother Isaac or even more distant relationship. Relationship to Berry is also purely speculative.
